Goodbye padlock on google chrome: what changes?

Google Introduces the New Tune Icon

Does anything change for the HTTPS protocol?

The news was announced on the official Google Chrome blog in early May 2023 and is already generating curiosity—and some concern—among industry professionals.

According to research conducted by Google, 89% of people browsing online perceive the padlock icon as a sort of certificate of a website’s overall security.

While HTTPS remains a ranking factor and an important indicator of a secure website connection, it does not certify proper data management, privacy, or the reliability of the site owner.

How Does the New Icon Work?

Even though the padlock will no longer appear on Chrome, you can simply click the new tune icon to access the information you need and verify a website’s SSL certificate. In fact, the padlock icon next to the URL is not completely deprecated.

What Changes for HTTPS on Websites?

Nothing. HTTPS remains a ranking factor and, more importantly, an essential parameter for page experience, ensuring a complete and secure user experience. Replacing the padlock icon with a neutral indicator prevents users from associating HTTPS with total page reliability. However, website security—and overall quality—still depends on HTTPS.
