The most talked-about domain extension in the history of the web is about to make its debut. Starting December 6, 2011, it will be possible to purchase .XXX domain names, reserved exclusively for adult content websites.

The .XXX extension does more than just certify the nature of the content. It also allows users to browse safely, thanks to continuous monitoring for viruses and malware by McAfee, a leader in online security.

Although this “revolution” primarily affects those in one of the most prolific sectors of the web in terms of traffic and revenue, the launch of this new extension could have implications for non-industry participants as well. Because of its specific nature, .XXX domains can host only adult content, which means cases of personal or brand name conflicts could lead to unpleasant surprises.

For example, discovering that your personal name or company name with a .XXX extension displays explicit content, with no way to prevent it, is certainly an experience anyone would want to avoid. The best protection in this case is to register the domain to prevent misuse.
