Chrome becomes a “cop”: from version 82, it will warn and block unsafe downloads!

Recently, Google revealed important details about the roadmap for upcoming Chrome releases, specifically regarding how it will warn and block “unsafe” downloads from HTTPS web pages.

"We are gradually ensuring that only safe files can be downloaded from secure HTTPS pages. Files downloaded insecurely pose a risk to user security and privacy. For example, insecurely downloaded programs can be replaced with malware by attackers, and malicious actors could intercept bank statements downloaded insecurely," explained Chrome’s security lead, Joe DeBlasio.

Chrome refers to this as “mixed content”, meaning “unsafe” elements from non-HTTPS sites embedded within HTTPS sites.

Gradual Implementation

Graduality is the key feature of Chrome’s rollout plan. Starting with version 82, expected in April, the browser will warn users if they attempt to download unsafe executables from an HTTPS website.

What This Means for You

We recommend activating an SSL certificate on your official website immediately. This ensures compliance with the new guidelines and prevents your site from being flagged or blocked.
